Likelihood of admission / Selection Process

After the application deadline, the faculty will review the completed application packets and invite selected applicants to come to the Department for an interview and a tour of the Department facilities. The applicant will interview with at least two faculty members for a total of about 20 minutes. The applicant will also interview with a group of students in the Department, and have a guided tour of the Department facilities. During the visit to the Department, the applicant is encouraged to ask questions to solidify their impression of the focus and philosophy of the Program.

Applicants are encouraged to visit the Department for the interview, but if a visit is impossible (because of financial or travel constraints), they may be offered a phone interview. Phone interviews also typically last 20 minutes, and every attempt will be made to have the applicant talk to at least two faculty members.

The number of applicants invited for an interview varies from year to year, but usually 80 applicants are so invited. The faculty then reviews the interviewed applicants and recommends 24 applicants to the Graduate School for admission to the Program for the following year. Additionally, the faculty recommends a list of 30 applicants to be used as alternates.

In terms of a time schedule, interviews usually start in the middle of January, and last until the middle of March.
